Evans the team leader

The name itself as it is captivating and depicts excitement for the family. The first Family Ties Camp Kenya did not fall short of this last April 25, 2010 at Arboretum Garden, Nairobi. It was full of fun and excitement for the families that attended. Right from the beginning, when the energetic and enthusiastic KFC volunteers and missionaries set up the venue, to when to when our uncles and unties begun arriving and filling the environment with cheer and laughter.

The activities were nourishing to the families, and this was evident from the responses coming from them. There were two talks (We are family & Together in Every situation) aimed at building the family and this were given by our very own special Aunt Lillian Njoroge and Uncle David Makonen.

There were exciting activities too. Each family were asked to make a flag that represented what their family stood for. As a family, they had to protect this flag from the bad advocates who steals flags. The families also had a picnic together as they brought delicious lunch. Then, there was the Obstacle Race where in the parents and kids showed their youthfulness and family unity as they all participated to win. The families also had an opportunity to hold dialogues and have heart to heart discussions on matters to build their unity in the family. The families were then being presented Certificates of Participation. Lastly the camp was ended by a celebrating of the Holy Mass and all the families were blessed by Fr. Alphonse Ouma. (Evans Kagane)

Special Note from the Teamleader: The day was a great blessing and we give thanks to God for answering our prayers.  We also give thanks to the 12 families that participated, to all the KFC volunteers and to the Missionaries under the headship of Nic and Chelo Escalona.

CFC Mombasa
CFC Nairobi
CFC Missionaries with Bishop

Every year for the past three years, CFC – Kenya has been having leaders’ recollection annually.  This retreat is designed for leaders in CFC and the mature family Ministries; SFC, HOLD and SOLD. The meeting is usually meant to help the leaders re-appreciate the CFC theme for a particular year as they reach down to their members.

This year’s retreat, on 17th April, 2010, was graciously hosted by his Lordship David Kamau the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Nairobi at his residence in Karen.  There were leaders from the Archdiocese of Nairobi and the Archdiocese of Mombasa (540 kms away from Nairobi). The delegation of leaders from Mombasa was led by the CFC Full Time Pastoral Worker in Mombasa, Uncle Sylvester Mahiri. Uncle James Ssemwangu, a missionary from the neighbouring Uganda and  from the IMO, Uncle Clarke Nebrao joined the recollection.

At 11:00 AM, the recollection started with worship led by the SFC band. Nic Escalona, the outgoing Mission’s head of Kenya welcomed every one and went ahead to give the days reflection which was meant to help the leaders re-appreciate this year’s theme, “Fullness of life in Christ” Col 2: 6 – 8.

He broke his message down by breaking the word FULLNESS to all the attendants. F – Faithfulness to prayer and scripture and generally the covenant card.  U – Unity in the Family, and placing priorities in the right order; God, Family and Work. LL – Love for Life. N – Nationalism (Love for country: as God’s gift to us). E – Evangelisation. S – Support for our parishes and missions. S – Sacraments.

After the reflection, the Bishop shared about the stand of the church concerning the draft constitution. Kenya has been working on a new constitution and this year will be referendum. The Church is opposed to it on grounds that it is a moral prefect and the constitution was lowering the dignity of the human being by having section which may lead to legalisation of abortion. Also it is opposed to it on the grounds of having Kadhi’s (Muslim) courts.  He went on to explain how slowly humans are secularizing the message of the gospel, for example, saying reproduction instead of Procreation, or partner instead of spouse and much more. After these, Bishop David Kamau celebrated the HolyMass. Everyone was then invited to join in the fellowship with a very delightful Lunch. The recollection ended at around 5pm. Discussion

Last March 20 to 21, 2010 was a very powerful weekend. Packed with so much learning and time-together, 7 couples were led by David and Njeri Makonnen as they went thru a Marriage Enrichment Retreat 2 at the Subiaco Retreat Center in Karen. Couples had a time to talk, listen and re energize their marriages thru the power of the Holy Spirit as talks were given by leaders of CFC in Nairobi.

Some points to reflect on from the weekend:

* “Your bedroom is not a boardroom”.

* Forgiveness does not make the other person right. Instead, forgiveness makes you and the other person free.

* The right order in our life is: GOD (1st), FAMILY (2nd), WORK (3rd). When it is the other way around, then there is and there can be a problem in your marriage.
