Consultant Graphic Designer ( Remote working-based in Nairobi, Kenya or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia)

Introduction

Selam is seeking a skilled and experienced Graphic Designer to support the Connect for Culture Africa (CfCA) project and the Pan-African Network for Artistic Freedom (PANAF). The consultant will be responsible for designing high-quality visual materials that align with CfCA’s and PANAF’s advocacy, communication, and branding objectives. The consultant will work closely with the CfCA and PANAF team to create impactful digital and print materials that enhance the visibility of the project and effectively communicate key messages to target audiences.

Background of the CfCA Project

The Connect for Culture Africa (CfCA) project is a five-year regional initiative (2023-2027) that aims to strengthen cultural networks, advocate for increased public investment in the cultural and creative industries (CCIs), and promote the role of culture in democratic, social, and economic development. The project is implemented in collaboration with local partners in Ethiopia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Tanzania, with outreach to other African countries.

Background for the PANAF Project


The Pan-African Network for Artistic Freedom (PANAF) is an initiative advocating for freedom of artistic expression in the creative sector. PANAF seeks to establish an inclusive voice for organisations, artists and culture producers to demand for safe and enabling environments for artistic creativity in the society. PANAF is part of the Programme for Artistic Freedom, managed by the Swedish Arts Council (SAC), and seeks to contribute towards increased documented monitoring of artistic freedom globally and strengthened capacity of rights holders to conduct advocacy work which contribute to increased respect protection, as well as realization of the right to artistic freedom and providing actors working for artistic freedom with access to common networks and forums for collaboration.

Purpose of the Assignment

The Graphic Designer will provide professional design services to support both CfCA and PANAF advocacy and communication efforts. The consultant will develop creative visual assets for print, social media, websites, and other communication platforms to enhance CfCA and PANAF’s outreach and engagement.

Scope of Work

The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks related to both CfCA and PANAF projects: 

  1. Branding and Visual Identity: Ensure that all designed materials align with CfCA’s and PANAF branding and communication guidelines. This will include developing a guide and templates for co-branding of both PANAF & CfCA brands. 
  2. Social Media Graphics: Design engaging social media content, including social media visuals, infographics, GIFs banners, and promotional materials.
  3. Reports and Publications: Create visually appealing layouts for reports, brochures, policy briefs, and other publications.
  4. Advocacy Materials: Develop posters, flyers, banners, branded merchandise and other campaign materials as briefed to support CfCA and PANAF advocacy initiatives.
  5. Presentation Templates: Design PowerPoint and other presentation materials for internal and external use. 
  6. Website and Digital Content: Support the development of website visuals and digital assets.
  7. Event Materials: Create signage, banners, backdrops, and other visual elements for CfCA and PANAF events. Event materials may from time include  cobranding with partner logos as briefed. 
  8. Illustrations and Infographics: Develop custom illustrations and infographics to simplify complex information.
  9. Video and Motion Graphics (if applicable): Design simple animations and motion graphics for digital storytelling as briefed.

Deliverables and Timeline

The consultant will deliver the following:

  • Monthly Social Media Graphics – Ongoing
  • Cobranding guide and templates -First month of the assignment
  • Event Materials (Banners, Posters, etc.) – As per event schedule
  • Report Layouts and Infographics – As needed
  • Advocacy Campaign Materials – As per campaign calendar
  • Presentation Templates and Digital Assets – As briefed
  • Finalized Branding Materials – As briefed

Consultant Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Proven experience in graphic design, particularly in advocacy, cultural, or nonprofit sectors.
  • Strong portfolio showcasing expertise in digital and print design.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, and Canva.
  • Experience in developing infographics and data visualization.
  • Knowledge of branding and marketing strategies.
  • Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines.
  • Experience working with African cultural projects is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with video editing and motion graphics.
