Marketing and Communications Officer
BACKGROUND
Selam is a Pan-African organization with offices in Addis Ababa, Nairobi, and Stockholm.
Established in 1997, Selam has grown into a prominent international actor, partnering with artists, cultural producers, private sector entities, media, institutions, researchers, and government bodies across Africa and beyond. Selam engages in global and African cultural networks and regularly participates in networking meetings and conferences across Africa, Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia.
Selam has executed various regional and national initiatives in Africa, and currently runs two Pan-African projects, PANAF and Connect for Culture Africa (CfCA), alongside a national project in Ethiopia.
To strengthen its visibility and outreach, Selam is looking to hire a Marketing and Communication (M&C) Officer based in Nairobi, Kenya, or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
SCOPE OF WORK
The successful candidate will work with Selam’s international project team, collaborating closely with program staff based in Stockholm, Nairobi, and Addis Ababa.
The main responsibilities of the Marketing and Communication Officer include:
● Supporting the development of M&C strategies that aligns with program objectives and implement these.
● Coordinating and managing public relations, media outreach, and digital marketing campaigns to amplify the visibility and engagement for Selam’s regional projects.
● Creating, editing, and managing content for CfCA’s and PANAF’s websites, social media platforms, newsletters, and other communications channels.
● Supporting event promotion and digital marketing strategies for CfCA and PANAF events (conferences, festivals, summits) to maximize audience reach and impact.
● Engaging with Selams network and stakeholders, including artists, cultural organizations, civil society, media, and government representatives.
● Building and maintaining relationships with media outlets, influencers, and key partners to promote the CfCA and PANAF initiatives.
● Providing guidance on inclusive, gender-aware, and culturally sensitive communication practices.
● Collecting and analyzing data on CfCA’s and PANAF’s communications impact, and preparing regular reports on engagement metrics, outreach successes, and areas for improvement.
The officer will be expected to exhibit a flexible approach and provide support to the broader project team when required.
TIME FRAME
This is a full-time assignment, starting with a six-month probation period with the possibility of extension. The successful candidate is expected to start as soon as possible.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERTISE
The ideal candidate will:
● Hold a university degree in communication, marketing, project management, development, culture, or a related field deemed relevant for the position.
● Have at least 3 years of proven experience in marketing, communication, and event promotion, preferably in the cultural or development sector.
● Demonstrate experience in managing successful communication and outreach campaigns.
● Possess strong organizational and project management skills.
● Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, with full proficiency in English and strong reporting abilities.
● Be familiar with digital marketing strategies, social media management, and content creation.
● Show an openness to working in a multicultural, diverse environment and be comfortable engaging with varied audiences and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
● Proficiency in additional languages, especially French, Portuguese, and/or Swahili.
● Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a dynamic and diverse team environment.
Location Requirements:
The candidate must be based in Nairobi, Kenya, or Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. If based in Nairobi, they must hold a license to work as an independent consultant.
